Claude Jutra shot The Devil’s Toy in Montreal, but edited it in California when he was teaching at the University of California, Los Angeles. California is the origin and mecca of the skateboard industry.

The dangerous Westmount slope shown in the movie is nicknamed "the Devil’s Toy" by skaters in Montreal.

When The Devil’s Toy was shot, a skateboard cost $5, which would equal $82 today.

Curated by the authors of nyskateboarding.com, the Twitter account @nyskateboarding documents the New York City skate scene in real time.

Skaters in the film are from the punk band Cerebral Ballzy, formed in New York City in 2008. Their sound is reminiscent of the first wave of American hardcore, which was often associated with skateboarding in the 1980s.

Evidence that skateboarding is now part of the popular culture: you can rent limited edition boards in the New York City branches of the W boutique hotel chain.

Active law enforcement targeting skaters began with the reign of Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 1994, who increased police presence throughout the city, and with it the number of tickets.

The director’s favourite moment involves the scene where you can see a large group of skaters ignoring an electronic road pricing gantry. The increased number of these gantries is an exasperating symbol of the city’s high cost of living.

With its independent skate shops and a network of indoor and outdoor skate parks, Victoriaville is proof that skateboarding can thrive in the suburbs.

French Fred hails from Lyon, and it’s through that city that he shaped his relationship to skateboarding.

The main character is pro skater Flo Mirtain, who’s been calling Lyon home for more than 10 years.

Exhaustive list of Flo Mirtain’s tricks on the ledge : backside tailslides, backside smithgrinds, backside lipslide and even a backside backside.

The massive set of stairs is a famous skate spot in the city, one of the biggest and hardest, says the director. The first pro skater to jump over them was Andrew Reynolds, over 10 years ago.

One of the aspect of The Devil’s Toy the director loved the most was his critical tone, especially considering it’s has not been heard too often in skate movies, since they’re generally a promotional effort.

Lyon has the biggest police ratio per capita in all of France. In 1998, a video surveillance system was connected throughout the city. Big Brother says hi.

According to French Fred, another director in this remix project, Machotaildrop, the first feature film by Corey Adams, is one of the few skate films to bring forward a critical look at the skate world ... since The Devil's Toy by Claude Jutra.

The Manwolfs, a semi-fictional skater gang, are ever present in director Corey Adams’ body of work. They originally appeared in his first feature film, Machotaildrop.

Was skating born in Venice or Santa Monica?

For decades, the two compete for its birthplace. It originated from surfers looking to practice their sport during low season.

In the ‘70s, a huge surge in skateboarding began thanks to the** Z-Boys**, a group of legendary skateboarders from Santa Monica to whom we owe the sport as we know it today.

In the late '50s in Los Angeles, Bill Richard became the first entrepreneur to manufacture skateboards in a non-artisanal manner. Prior to him, skaters themselves assembled skate wheels to boxes or wooden boards.
